Felt Pumpkins Tutorial

Share

It’s pumpkin season and Benzie is here for it! From Maker Team member Alexis of @felthappysewing, create a cute felt pumpkin using earthy tones from our Amber Glow Bellwether palette. They're here just in time for Halloween and will transition beautifully to your Thanksgiving table. We think they're gourd-eous!

This pattern will guide you through crafting a pumpkin featuring a boxy bottom and a playful twisty vine that brings a touch of charm! Perfect for fall décor, this project is beginner-friendly, works up in under 30 minutes and is oh, so fun to make. Once you make one, you won’t be able to stop!

Additional Supplies:

Sewing Machine
Pencil

Directions:

Pumpkin

1. Fold a 6 x 9” piece of felt in half, short sides touching. Clip in place. Using a ½” seam allowance and a short stitch length, machine sew together right and bottom sides, leaving top open.

2. Turn right side out. Push out two corner points and stuff.

3. Cut a 5' length of embroidery floss. Do not separate strands (use all six) and knot at one end. About ½" from top, hand sew a long running stitch around open end.

4. Once running stitch is complete, pull taught (like a drawstring) and knot in place. Do not cut thread.

5. Push threaded needle down through center and out the bottom. Make a box-like bottom by folding two corners toward the center, like you are wrapping a present. Hold one corner down with your finger. Pull the embroidery thread over this flap and around side of the pumpkin to the top.

Instead of stitching in place, run your needle immediately back down through the top center and out the bottom. Pull the thread as you go, creating tension needed to hold pumpkin ridges in place.

6. Repeat Step 5 with the other corner flap to create a second ridge opposite the first.

7. Add two to four additional evenly spaced ridges using the same technique. Once ridges are complete, ensure the needle is at the center top of pumpkin. Double knot floss in place and run needle down and out the side. Trim floss.

Stem

8. Cut a 2 x 2” square of Nutmeg felt for stem. Roll into stem shape and glue closed. You can also use a cork, piece of driftwood or cinnamon stick for the stem.

9. To create a spiral vine, cut 4-5" length of floral wire with wire cutters. Twist wire around a pencil. Pull spiral off pencil and snip at the end.

10. Firmly wrap one end of spiral vine around stem bottom. Add glue to stem bottom and place on the top center of pumpkin. Step back and admire the fruit of your labors!

Go ahead and make five (or ten) more and cover your home with pumpkins!
