Shake things up with a snow globe made for Halloween! These spooky snow globe ornaments are a super cute way for Halloween fans to decorate. Mix our Circle and Scallops and Snow Globe Base dies, toss in a bit of vinyl and you've got a potion for a spook-tacular craft!
Snow globes are often associated with Christmas or as travel souvenirs, but I grew up with them for every holiday and season - Halloween included! I especially remember one that had little bats floating around. Maybe I should find some tiny bats to go inside an ornament!
Skill Level: Beginner
Time: 1-2 hours
Additional Supplies:
Ghost Pattern (click to download)
Pencil
Freezer Paper - optional
Iron - optional
Directions:
1. Using the dies from the supply list, cut the following pieces:
Large Scalloped Circle - Cut 1 from Vinyl
Large Plain Circle - Cut 2 from Pink felt
Large Snow Globe Base - Cut 2 from Magenta felt
Using the pattern above, cut a Ghost from White felt and embroider the face with three strands of Black floss.
Tracing the pattern on freezer paper and ironing to the felt makes this easier. You can stitch through the paper and then carefully tear it away.
2. Center Ghost on one Pink circle. Stitch around edges with a whip stitch, using two strands of White floss.
3. Before applying the vinyl, it helps to poke out the tiny circles from the stitch markings. Clear away any extra vinyl bits, dust or fibers.
Layer the plain Pink circle behind embellished Pink circle and place vinyl circle on top. Using three strands of Magenta floss, stitch around the circle with running stitch through the holes. Leave a 1" opening.
4. Place a small amount of sequins inside the snow globe. These sequins are small enough to fit between the stitches but, because of how the materials are layered, they don't fall out.
5. Finish stitching opening closed with running stitch, then go back in the opposite direction to fill in the gaps.
6. Layer snow globe top between the two base pieces. Position it so it looks like it's resting in the base.
7. Stitch around base with running stitch and then go back and fill in the gaps as you did in Step 5.
Stitching through the vinyl layer is a little trickier here because there aren't pre-made holes, but any stray holes won't show when they are between the felt layers.
8. To add a hanger, use three strands of embroidery floss and go through back layer of the ornament. Be careful not to go through the front!
9. Tie ends of hanger together about 3" from top of snow globe. Trim the thread.
Shake your snow globe to move the sparkly "snow" around! It may not fall like in a traditional snow globe, but it will make its way to the bottom eventually. If you don't want sequins in a particular spot (like if they cover a face), shift the material slightly or slide a needle under the vinyl to move them.
Now that you've made a spooky snow globe, what other styles will you make? As long as a design fits within the circle, you can use it!
With the holiday season coming up, snow people and houses are a great fit, but they are just the start! Happy crafting!
