Who doesn’t love a cupcake? They’re colorful, playful, tasty - and now you can make your own out of felt! In this post, Laura Hopper of @sonicstitches takes you step-by-step through making felt play cupcakes with beautiful ombré frosting and glittery cupcake holders. And they even fit into real cupcake tins, making playtime with these cupcakes even more realistic!

Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 1 Hour per cupcake

Shop Supplies

Additional Supplies:

Felt Cupcake Template  (click to download)
120 lb Cardstock

The supplies listed above will make six cupcakes with frosting in a pink and neutral gradient. If you’d like to select your own colors, one 9 x 12" sheet of felt makes two cupcake bases and one 9 x 12" sheet makes one cupcake frosting.

Directions:

1. Print Cupcake Template above on freezer paper. Cut templates from paper, but do not cut exactly along lines yet. Using medium heat, press templates onto felt.

As an alternative to freezer paper, print templates on regular paper and use a disappearing ink pen to trace onto felt.

2. Cut along template lines. Remove freezer paper.

3. Use cardstock templates to cut out a Bottom and Top for each cupcake. The cardstock will help ensure that cupcake has a flat top and bottom and is not overstuffed. Cutting the heavy cardstock can be tricky, but don’t worry if there are any jagged edges. The felt is thick enough to hide that.

Cupcake Base

4. Clip short ends of Cupcake Wall together and blanket stitch sides. Move from the wider, top opening to the smaller, bottom opening.

5. Clip Cupcake Base to the smaller, bottom opening of Cupcake Wall. Blanket stitch around perimeter. Set base aside.

Cupcake Frosting

6. Fold one Frosting circle in half twice. The piece should now look like a pie-shaped quarter circle with one folded short side and an open short side, coming together at the point. Fold three more Frosting pieces in the same manner.

7. Sew four folded pieces to one unfolded Frosting circle. As the Frosting pieces are stitched down, be sure folded edges are facing same direction. These stitches will not be seen in the finished piece, so you do not need to worry about how they look. A simple cross stitch at the point of each folded piece works great.

8. Create a second layer of Frosting by folding four more pieces into quarters. Offset second layer and stitch them into place using a cross stitch as shown in Step 7. Sew through all layers of felt.

Be sure folded edges of second layer are facing in same direction to each other - but opposite of folded pieces on the first layer. The frosting will look more natural if you pay attention to the placement of these folded pieces.

9. Place final Frosting circle on top of two layers created in Steps 7 and 8. Secure by stitching through all layers with one cross stitch in center of the circle.

10. After final Frosting circle is attached, fold it over and fluff up the entire piece of frosting until you are happy with the look.

Assemble Cupcakes

11. Center the finished Frosting on Cupcake Top. Gently pull Frosting to the side and sew a loose back stitch around bottom Frosting piece. These stitches will not be seen, so don’t worry about being tidy.

12. Place cardstock Cupcake Bottom in bottom of felt base.

13. Add a ball of stuffing to base. Do not overstuff or the cupcake will look round.

14. Place cardstock Cupcake Top above stuffing and gently push down. While holding cardstock in place, clip Frosting to Top, matching edges.

15. Blanket stitch around entire circle to complete the cupcake. This part can be a bit finicky because it is hard to move the needle around the frosting, so take your time.

Cupcake Holders

16. Using Scallop Shears, trim Holder Wall as close to top edge as possible.

17. Hold two short edges of Holder Wall together so they are flat. Whip stitch down the short side. Glitter felt is thicker than wool blend or Bellwether felt, so a flat edge is important to creating an authentic cupcake holder shape.

18. Line up Holder Base and Wall and blanket stitch around perimeter. Clips may prove difficult with glitter felt, so take your time and use your hands to hold it in place, if necessary.

Your first felt cupcake is complete! Make a set of six for a fun baking play set.

This tin is the perfect size to hold a full set of felt cupcakes for hours of imaginative play!
