Tree Farm Stocking Tutorial

Share

"In my heart is a Christmas tree farm..." Embellish our classic felt stocking with a scene straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting (or Taylor Swift song.) Our new Tree Farm Stocking pattern includes the decorative and stocking patterns, an alphabet for personalization and bonus instructions to make a matching ornament! "Baby, baby, Merry Christmas!"

Skill Level: Intermediate
Time: 8 hours

Shop Supplies

Additional Supplies:

Sewing Machine
Ribbon - optional

Directions:

1. Prepare Stocking Base as instructed in our Felt Stocking tutorial. This project uses Nordic felt for the Base and Ecru felt for the Lining. At Step 4, proceed with these directions to embellish the stocking prior to assembly.

2. Print Tree Farm pattern onto cardstock. Cut out pieces and trace onto corresponding felt. Cut out. These elements can be arranged a variety of ways, but the steps for assembly should still be completed in the same order.

As an alternative to cutting out the small circles with scissors, use a standard hole punch (1/4") to punch out felt circles.

3. Arrange Trees and vehicle Bodies (without other components) in desired formation and glue in place. Perimeter of vehicles and trees will be whip stitched in a later step, so glue does not need to go to the very edges. Allow to dry.

Wagon

4. Glue Tires and Hubs into place, followed by the front and rear Bumpers and Running Board. Tweezers may be helpful when gluing smaller pieces.

5. Glue Ecru Light in place. Cut Persimmon Light in half and glue halves stacked on the rear of Wagon.

6. Whip stitch around perimeter of Body, Bumpers and Running Board with Butterscotch thread. Use one strand of thread for all stitching.

Switch to Slate thread and whip stitch around Tires.

7. Using Ecru thread, add two straight stitches extending from front Light to mimic rays of light.

8. Use Ecru thread to “secure” Tree atop Wagon. Stitch three long stitches from the second window over Tree.

Convertible

9. Using a Frixion pen, draw two door lines on Convertible using the dashed pattern lines as a guide. Use Ecru thread to stem stitch along lines.

10. Glue Tires and Hubs into place, followed by the front and rear Bumpers.

11. Cut Butterscotch and Persimmon Lights in half. Glue Butterscotch Light to front of Convertible and Persimmon Light to back. Set aside other Butterscotch half to use on the Truck.

12. Whip stitch around perimeter of Body and Bumpers with Tellina thread.

Switch to Ecru thread and whip stitch around Tires.

Truck

13. Using a Frixion pen, draw door line on Truck using the dashed pattern line as a guide. Use Ecru thread to stem stitch along line.

14. Glue Tires and Hubs into place, followed by Bumper.

15. Glue other half of Butterscotch Light from Step 11 to front of vehicle.

16. Whip stitch around perimeter of Body and Bumper with Persimmon thread.

Switch to Slate thread and whip stitch around tires.

17. Use hair dryer to erase any remaining marks from Frixion pen.

Trees

18. Use Sherwood thread to whip stitch around the Trees.

19. Use a permanent marker to write 'Sale' (or whatever is desired) on each Price Tag. Use Sherwood thread to attach tags to uncut Trees. As an alternative, use the Date Markers die and die cut machine to punch out tag shapes.

Beading

20. Switch to a beading needle. Use thread matching each vehicle to attach bugle beads as door handles.

21. Use Slate thread to stitch a gray bugle bead to rear of Truck for a license plate.

22. Use Ecru thread to attach white beads and sequins for falling snow. Bring needle up through sequin and bead and back down around the outside of the bead and back through sequin to secure. Try to add in an uneven, organic manner.

Finishing

23. After completing the Tree Farm design, return to the Felt Stocking tutorial to finish assembly.

24. To personalize, use Alphabet included in Tree Farm pattern to cut out name or initials. Glue letters to Name Tag. As an alternative, use the Letterbox die and die cutting machine to cut letters.

25. Use a few stitches to secure Name Tag to right upper corner of stocking. Add ribbon, if desired.

Your Tree Farm Stocking is ready for the mantle. The only thing missing is the treats that go inside!

Once you've finished your stocking, find bonus instructions for a matching ornament at the end of the Tree Farm Stocking instructions - our little gift to you!
