Nordic Woven Heart Die Tutorial

Share

Nordic comes from the word "norden" which means "north." We're tapping into northern tradition with these Nordic Woven Heart ornaments made popular in countries such as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. While you might have attempted these decorations with paper, we're giving them the Benzie treatment with felt! And we've created an original die which will make this craft come together in minutes. Hugs and kisses and felt for the new year!

Skill Level: Beginner

Time: 10 - 15 minutes

Shop Supplies

Additional Supplies:

Die Cut Machine
3/8" Velvet Ribbon - optional
Embroidery Needle - optional
Sulky Thread - optional
Patterned Felt - optional

Directions:

1. Use the Nordic Woven Heart Die and die cut machine to cut two halves from contrasting felt colors. This example uses Cherry Red and Plie felt.

2. Fold both felt pieces in half and press with hot iron.

3. Now it's time to weave! Position both felt pieces so the cut ends are angled toward each other. Pick one side to stay in place (A) while the other piece is worked onto it (B) as shown below.

It does not matter which piece, color or side is A or B. Letter designation is just to clarify the weaving instruction.

4. Weave ends of piece B in and around ends of A while gradually sliding piece B further onto A. Alternate the start of each end - either in or around - to create a checkered pattern.

5. Once all ends are woven together, gently adjust felt so pattern is even and lays flat. Use a touch of glue, if desired, to add extra strength to bottom and side loops. Gently lift the top layer of felt to add glue.

6. To make a handle, cut a 6" strip of ribbon or felt. Attach to inside top center of each side of ornament with glue or secure with thread and a few stitches.

Your Nordic woven heart decoration is complete! Embellish with additonal ribbon or use patterned felt to add to this already charming design.

These make LOVE-ly ornaments, party favors or place settings. However you use them, be sure to fill the hearts with sweet treats and share!
