Who wouldn't want a touch of glitter felt? Imagine the memories you'll make sitting at the bathroom counter together. Just don't ask to borrow any blush...

Playing with makeup is a rite of passage. It’s fun, it’s fancy, and it’s a playful way for a kid to feel more like a grown-up. Starting out with play makeup is best for young skin, and this tutorial walks you through all the steps to make your own customizable felt makeup palette! Use any felt colors for the makeup colors and learn how to embroider a child’s name on the cover, making this project even more special than play makeup you can get at the toy store. Pair this as a gift with real makeup brushes, and it’s time for fancy play time!

Felt Makeup Palette Templates  (click to download)
Nine felt scraps cut to 2.5” square
Jumbo Wonder Clips - optional

Directions:

Prepare Templates

1. Print Felt Makeup Palette Templates above onto freezer paper. Click here to learn how to transfer templates to felt using freezer paper. And click here to learn how to transfer templates to felt using Sticky Fabri-Solvy.

If you do not have freezer paper, print templates onto regular paper. Cut out and use a heat erasable pen to trace templates, then cut felt.

2. Cut two pieces of White felt that are each 12” x 5 3/4”. Align freezer paper templates and Sticky Fabri-Solvy template on each piece, as shown below. Iron freezer paper in place and stick Sticky Fabri-Solvy in place. The templates are sized to help you ensure they will be placed correctly, so line up the largest rectangular lines with edges of felt.

Carefully cut the interior rectangle mirror hole and all nine circles from the freezer paper templates. To do this, gently fold the section you want to cut in half and clip through the center with sharp scissors. Then, make your way to the rectangular or circular lines and cut.

If you want to customize the makeup palette, you will do that in the next step. Do not stick the Sticky Fabri-Solvy down until you have customized the name if you choose to.

Embroider Makeup Palette Cover

3. First, customize the name on makeup palette if you’d like by tracing font template letters onto Sticky Fabri-Solvy above the word “Makeup.”

4. Using four strands of embroidery floss and a split stitch, embroider over letters on makeup palette cover.

5. Trim all excess Sticky Fabri-Solvy as close to embroidery as possible.

6. Soak embroidery in room temperature water for at least 15 minutes or until all Sticky Fabri-Solvy has dissolved. To speed up drying process, place a paper towel below and on top of wet felt. Firmly press down so paper towels absorb as much water as possible. Do not wring out wet felt as the fibers could become distorted. Set cover aside.

Sew Mirror

7. Cut a 4 3/4” square of metallic felt.

8. Using Jumbo Wonder Clips (optional), clip metallic felt to back of mirror hole. If you do not have Jumbo Wonder Clips, use pins to hold metallic felt in place, or use tacky glue instead of sewing.

9. Using one strand of White thread and a whip stitch, reverse appliqué mirror behind mirror opening along all four sides.

Sew Makeup Palette Colors

10. Choose nine scraps of felt and cut them all to 2 1/2” squares. Have fun mixing regular felt and glitter felt!

I made two palettes. The first was for a child whose favorite color is pink, and the second was for a child whose favorite color is rainbow. This project is fun no matter what colors you choose! Also, you can find inspiration by looking at real makeup palettes.

11. Place a square of felt behind a cut circle. Clip in place.

12. Using one strand of White thread and a whip stitch, reverse appliqué makeup color behind cut circle.

13. Once entire circle has been sewn, use scissors to carefully trim excess felt.

The inside of makeup palette should now look like this:

Finish Makeup Palette

14. Clip cover and inside of makeup palette together. When palette is flipped over, embroidered name should be aligned with mirror side of the palette, but will appear upside down when viewed as shown below.

15. Using one strand of White thread and a blanket stitch, sew around three sides of makeup palette starting on one short end. Use a heat erasable pen to mark a line across center of makeup palette, between mirror and makeup color sides.

16. Using one strand of White thread, sew a running stitch across drawn mark, sewing through both layers of felt.

17. Cut two 5” x 5 1/2” pieces of Peltex. Slide one in each side of makeup palette through openings. There is no need to iron Peltex - the stitches will keep it in place.

18. Blanket stitch around remaining open side to close completely.

19. Trace makeup brush templates onto black felt for brush head and glitter felt (or felt of choice) for handle. Cut out.

20. Glue makeup brush templates to cover.

The makeup palette is complete! Gift to your Mini Me and spend some quality time getting ready together.
