Cozy up with a favorite beverage and these adorable felt coasters from Mollie of Wild Olive! Each one features a different quilt block that you can whip up in no time, and the simply stitched faces are just cute and fun. The Jeanette's Cozy Quilt Block deep-etch die set makes this project fast and easy, and thick Bellwether felt is the perfect base.
Skill Level: Beginner
Time: 2 hours, plus drying time
Additional Supplies:
Pencil
Squares & Scallops Deep-Etch Die - optional
Directions:
1. Cut a 4" square from wool blend felt as a working base. The Squares & Scallops die is perfect for this, but you can cut it with scissors or a rotary cutter. Cut a matching square from the thick felt. You'll need to use scissors for this.
Cut one set of these squares for each coaster.
2. Use the Jeanette's Cozy Quilt Blocks die pieces to cut out the pieces for each quilt block. If you plan out all of your quilt blocks at once, you can cut the pieces with fewer runs through your die cutting machine.
If you need inspiration for your quilt blocks, there are more examples here.
3. Arrange the quilt pieces on the thin felt square. They fit together like a puzzle. It helps to start with the corners and edges, then work toward the center. Nudge the pieces as needed so they fit.
4. Working with one piece at a time, spread a thin layer of glue on back of quilt piece, then press it into place. Be careful to avoid getting any glue on the fronts of the pieces!
Repeat this for all the shapes, then let the glue dry completely.
5. If you want to add a face like the example, use a pencil to mark the eyes and mouth. Use three strands of black embroidery floss to stitch french knot eyes and a scallop mouth. This step is optional, but super cute!
6. Using three strands of embroidery floss in whatever color you like, stitch around some or all of the shapes with running stitch. This step is also optional, but it looks like quilting, which is perfect for these coasters.
7. Spread a thin layer of glue over the thick felt square, then press the assembled quilt block onto the glue. Allow it to dry completely before using.
The four quilt blocks shown here are just the start of what you can make with this one set of dies. Arranging the same pieces in different ways can create entirely new designs! Not to mention, with all the felt color options you have, there's no end to the unique looks you can make.
