Move over, coffee. There's a new drink in town! This felt Hot Cocoa tutorial from Maker Team member Alexis of @felthappysewing will be a welcome addition to any play kitchen. Or add a string and hang it on the Christmas tree! We can't wait to whip up this drink - marshmallows included - because we think hot chocolate and crafting are Winter's best features.

There’s nothing cozier than a steaming mug of hot cocoa on a chilly winter day - except maybe a felt version you can sew yourself! Gather your materials, a warm drink and let’s get sewing!

Hot Cocoa SVG Pattern  (click to download)
Sewing Machine - optional

Directions:

1. Print the Hot Cocoa PDF pattern. Cut out pattern pieces and trace onto corresponding felt colors. Cut.

Alternatively, an SVG file is included to use with your electronic cutting machine.

2. Place the two Handle pieces directly on top of one another. Pin in place and using an 1/8” seam allowance, machine stitch together along the inner and outer curve edges. If hand sewing, blanket stitch all the way around. Snip threads.

3. Center Handle along one short edge of the Mug. Fold Mug in half lining up the two short edges. Pin in place. Using ¼" seam allowance, machine stitch from top to bottom, backstitching at the beginning and end. Snip threads. If hand sewing, use a backstitch.

4. Take Mug Bottom in Rainstorm (same color as Mug and Handle) and crease in half. Mark with a pen or with pins on both sides. Now, crease the opposite side and mark. With one bottom edge of the Mug, divide into quarters with the side seam being one of the points marked.

5. Line up four quarters of Mug Bottom and Mug, pinning both pieces together.

6. Using a ¼" seam allowance and, backstitching at the beginning and end, machine sew around stitching the Mug Bottom and Mug together. Snip threads. If hand sewing, use a backstitch.

7. Take Mug Top in Latte and divide into quarters like Step 4. Repeat with the other edge of Mug.

8. Line up four quarters of the Mug Top and Mug Bottom, pinning both pieces together.

9. Using a ¼" seam allowance, machine stitch leaving a 1” opening. Backstitch at the beginning and end. Snip threads.

10. Turn right sides out. Stuff Mug using a small amount of stuffing at a time to achieve a full and compact look.

11. Once fully stuffed, pin opening shut. Using a ladder/invisible hand stitch, sew opening closed. Run the end of your thread in through the mug and out through the side to conceal thread. Snip.

12. As an optional embellishment, center and glue on the Tree.

13. Using glue, dot about every ½" down the Marshmallow strip. Holding tightly, roll the felt inward. Add extra glue at the very end to secure the edge. Pin in place and allow to dry.

14. Attach Marshmallows to Mug Top by hand sewing or with glue.

Congratulations on completing your felt hot cocoa mug!
